RE :
2000 Self-Study Recommendations and Action Plans
Gail,
Here are the responses to the 2 questions:
a)
What kinds of surveys OCET is using to collect data about the educational
needs and wants of its students and the community-at-large?
Response:
July 2001 saw the implementation of a new Course Evaluation form used for
assessment of noncredit programs
. Questions on the form remained the same
except for information related to demographics and reason for attending (see
attached evaluation forms).
Additionally, the process of reviewing the evaluation form was as follows:
•forms were collected and summarized;
•copy was provided to coordinator who confirmed review of evaluation
instrument and completed with initials and date of review;
•after review by coordinator, evaluation form was provided to Director for
review and who also initialed and indicated date of review;
•copies of evaluation form with confirmation review by OCET were provided
to Instructor and an additional copy held for OCET course file for a
minimum archival period of 3 years.
•Information from the evaluation form was used to reconfirm if objectives were met
and or exceeded student/customer expectations;
•Teaching methodology utilized was appropriate to instruct and conveyed the
course material and overall content was delivered in an appropriate and
successful manner;
•Demographic information provided was used to determine future program needs
and questions number:
9 (In what areas could the course be improved?) and
10 (Do you have any other comments or suggestions?) were given
additional pertinent relevance
; and
•Common patterns and/or comments that appeared throughout all the
evaluation forms were given additional inquiry.
Currently, the Motorcycle Safety Program and the Theater Program do not use the
existing evaluation form
. Plans are to include the evaluation form as an assessment
tool for Motorcycle Safety Training in summer 2003
. Future plans are to do an
additional revision of the evaluation form at end of fall 2003 incorporating
comments/suggestions from staff, faculty and students.

b)
Explain how OCET is working to resolve credit and noncredit differences
on the LCC campus.
Initially, a few steps were initiated to begin the process of resolving issues
. The
overall objective was to improve the relationship of the unit with the rest of the
campus community and thereby strengthen its ability to deliver programs that meet
and/or exceed campus and community (including public, industry, government and
nonprofit agencies) needs and align with Leeward Community College's and the
new University of Hawaii System Strategic Plan.
'The Interim Director requested that Program Staff be allowed to attend
Division meetings in order to bridge, establish and provide an understanding
of OCET and credit programs and begin to open dialogues and
create opportunities for OCET to contribute to the college and its mission.
'Winter Session 2002/03 and Spring 2003 Evening/Weekend &
Distance Education credit courses were included in the Spring 2003 noncredit
schedule
. The quarterly term schedule was adjusted from 4 to 3 terms and
was used as a marketing tool to reflect both credit and noncredit
activities/programs open to the public
. This cross-marketing effort was
intended to leverage both programs in order to provide the public more
information through the Schedule of Courses (S
.O.C.) . Since the
courses/programs tended to appeal mostly to adult-learners, it was decided
to pilot this marketing effort over a year and assess the success or need and
to improve/revise this approach throughout the period.
'Efforts by OCET staff to participate in campus events were also encouraged in
order to provide a presence and interest that would improve relationships
and hopefully, greater awareness of OCET contributions to campus life and
community.
•A year-end report of OCET activities will be provided in Fall 2003 of FY `02-03
(July 1, 2002 - June 30, 2003)
. The information is intended to provide
information about activities of the unit
; successes and issues
; partnerships;
financial goats and clarify any issues of the OCET unit and thereby provide a
broader understanding and appreciation of the continuing education unit and
its contributions as a member of the college
.
